Nabucco

By: Giuseppe Verdi
Stage: 102nd Arena di Verona Festival
Language: Italian

This is definitely not yet another Nabucco production. Director and designer Stefano Poda has created an apocalyptic vision titled "Atomic Nabucco." The vast arena stage becomes a futuristic, metallic, shiny space with a giant hourglass at its center, symbolizing the transience of power. Poda uses laser technology, dramatic lighting, and hundreds of participants to tell the biblical story as a parable about humanity caught between technology and spirituality. The production features the great diva of our time, Anna Netrebko, who takes on the demanding, virtuosic role of Abigail, alongside the celebrated Mongolian baritone Amartuvshin Enkhbat as King Nabucco. The juxtaposition of the arena's ancient stones and the futuristic design is ominously sinister, and the choir of a thousand singers is overwhelming.

Theodor

By: Yonatan Cnaan (music) and Ido Riklin (libretto and direction)
Stage: The Israeli Opera
Language: Hebrew

An Israeli pride-inspiring achievement. The opera "Theodor" is not a trite historical biography but a brilliant psychological drama unfolding in two spheres: that of the young, natty, and lonely Theodore in Paris during the Dreyfus trial, and that of the aging, unwell, yet determined Herzl in Basel. The production was edited and filmed to the highest quality, allowing viewers to discern the subtlest nuances in the singers' performance, and to enter the soul of Israel's visionary. The Israeli soloists are at their best in a moving performance in Hebrew that brings the familiar story to life from a human, vulnerable, and surprising angle.

L'Italiana in Algeri

By: Gioacchino Rossini
Stage: Salzburg Festival
Language: Italian

Directors Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier take Rossini's comedy and shake it up. The plot's setting is not a traditional oriental palace but rather modern, chaotic Algiers, bursting with slapstick humor, bright colors, and nods to pop culture. A production that "redefines comedy in opera", with a dizzying pace and a stage that never rests. In the role of Isabella, the legendary mezzo-soprano and director of the Salzburg Festival, Cecilia Bartoli, known for her comic acting skills and her breathtaking virtuoso singing. Alongside her, Russian bass singer Ildar Abdrazakov in the entertaining role of Mustafa.

Turandot

By: Giuseppe Verdi
Stage: Teatro Regio Torino
Language: Italian

Director Stefano Poda returns with a completely different visual masterpiece. Instead of the usual red-and-white Chinese palace, Poda has created a white, sterile, and mystical world. Everything - the stage, costumes, and lighting – is in bright white, emphasizing the Ice Princess's emotional stagnation. A sweeping production combining dance, fashion, and architecture to create a suspenseful experience. Conductor Gianandrea Noseda leads the Turin Orchestra in a precise musical interpretation. Rebecca Luker is the impressive Turandot, and Jorge de León is Prince Calaf, who sings the famous "Nessun Dorma".

The production includes partial artistic nudity

La Traviata

By: Giuseppe Verdi
Stage: Bregenz Festival
Language: Italian

A first: Verdi's beloved tragedy on the famous Bregenz Lake Stage in Austria. The production, marking the festival's 80th anniversary, is directed by Damiano Michieletto, one of the most sought-after directors in the world today. With designer Paolo Fantin, they transfer the story of Violetta Valeri to the "roaring twenties" - a world of jazz parties, Hollywood glamour, and inner emptiness. And where? On a giant floating set on the waters of the Bregenz Seebühne.
