Soldier of Hope

The artwork Soldier of Hope merges bronze sculpture with a large-scale painting, based on the belief that "All Jews are responsible for one another" and that a society grows when "elders plant trees whose shade they will never sit in". It speaks to the story, contrasts, and spirit of Israel. At the forefront, an IDF soldier kneels in standard "Bet" uniform, symbolizing equality, unity, and the supreme goal of national security, reminding us that we act as one united People. In the center, he pauses from defending his home to plant a sapling out of a deep desire to do good and build a better future. This act expresses the nation's power to grow from crises, its love for the land, and the triumph of the building spirit even in hard times. Beside him lies his American M4A1 rifle, emphasizing the deep connection between American Jewry and Israel, and recalling the Paratroopers who fought on October 7th. The contrast between the weapon and planting symbolizes the Israeli duality: vigilance and defense alongside a connection to the land and a pursuit of growth and peace. Behind the sculpture, the painting shows the ancient history of Jerusalem's walls on the left, and the city's present and future through agricultural landscapes and cultural institutions on the right. The soldier stands in the center as a linking core between history and the future that depends on him. In the background, Jerusalem is bathed in a sunrise symbolizing hope.
In Memory of Harry Levine
The artwork is inspired by and dedicated to American-Jewish philanthropist Harry Levine, a pivotal figure in the state's establishment who worked modestly to finance and provide armaments to the Haganah, purchase the ship, "Exodus", and co- found the Weizmann Institute of Science. The soldier's face in the sculpture was inspired by him, forever immortalizing his historical contribution and love for our country. The piece was generously donated by his nephew Marc Shmuel, who immigrated from the US driven by Zionism and love of our country, aiming to ensure that his uncle Harry's legacy, values, and vision will continue to inspire future generations.
