Israel Quilters Association: Paths

Patchworking – quilting – belongs to the textile arts.  Traditional Quilts as well as Art Quilts strive to create patterns and images as compositions of various fabrics. The works are created using the quilt vocabulary – layers of fabric, thread and filling utilizing a range of different techniques.

The Art Quilt, different from the Traditional Quilt, is not committed to a specific pattern or specified use, and prioritizes the artist’s vision. The works range from abstract to representational, from conceptual to intuitive.  They function as wall-hung artwork inviting to observation, exploration and interpretation.

The theme of the exhibit, Paths, touches the physical as well as the metaphorical meaning of the word: journey, choice, memory and movement in time and space.  The works present a wide range of paths – in nature and in cities, individual and collective, in the open or hidden – using techniques taken from the traditional as well as from the art quilt.  They invite the visitor to walk, observe, interpret each path in its own way.
