Evguenia Golant: Haifa 2024-2025

The paintings of Evgenia Golant (b. 1973, St. Petersburg; immigrated to Israel in 2024) are characterized by strongly drawn figures in acrylic on ready-made surfaces, such as newsprint or a page from a book. A recent immigrant to Israel, she describes her encounter with the city of Haifa:

"In the exhibition, I present the landscapes of Haifa, the faces of its residents, sketches from the zoo, and scenes from the cafes. This is my first impression of the city and the country in which I live now. Since I immigrated to Israel (less than a year ago), I have been surprised to discover in the streets many objects that have been abandoned but still bear evidence of their past lives – a mirror, an artistic print, a book. I began to incorporate these discoveries into my works. I feel that a background that is more than just a blank white surface – but an object with history and memory – gives the work an additional layer, and sometimes even creates a 'double bottom' of meaning..."
