The film follows the fictional Familia Corleone, one of the families that dominated New York's Sicilian Mafia in the mid-20th century. At its heart is a principled man who gradually becomes a villain. Michael, an American war hero, finds himself compelled by circumstances to uphold his family's code rather than turn his back on its life of crime.
