Edith, a journalist in her forties, has chosen to become pregnant through a sperm donation and is now a single mother to a five-year-old boy. She is happy to be a parent, but the need to be both mother and father begins to exhaust her emotionally, undermining her confidence. She also worries that the child will be harmed. One day, by chance, she discovers the sperm donor's identity and learns he lives not far away. Curiosity urges Edith to make an excuse to meet him – a decision that sets off an unexpected chain of events and disrupts the delicate balance of her life.
