Psychological Issues as Reflected in the Bible

The stories of the Bible—especially those in Genesis—are the founding myths of the Jewish people and, in many ways, of humanity as a whole. It is hardly surprising, then, that they illuminate relationships among individuals, couples, family members, and society as a whole—and continue to speak to us. 

What can the stories of biblical siblings—from Cain and Abel through Jacob and Esau to Joseph and his brothers—teach us about parental favoritism, sibling jealousy, fair and unfair competition within the family, and the responsibility parents bear for their children's difficulties? 

Dr. Yael Doron is a rehabilitation psychologist and group analyst who heads the Couples Institute in Ramat Gan, specializing in individual, couples, and group therapy for relationship issues. She is a member of the teaching faculty at the Peres Academic Center and the Israeli Institute for Group Analysis. She teaches at the Mifrasim Institute at Tel Aviv-Yafo Academic College, lectures to the general public on psychology and relationships, and leads workshops on personal and professional relationships for organizations and companies in both the public and private sectors. Dr. Doron is also a relationship expert on Keshet 12's "Married at First Sight."
