Singing and Speaking Hebrew: Songs from Israeli Musicals
'Sing-along with the Orchestra' series
A series of public singing performances in the Jerusalem Theatre's Concert Hall
With the participation of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra conducted by Eldad Shrem
In the 1960s, producer Giora Godik founded the first Hebrew musical theatre. With the production of Kazablan, he opened a new chapter in our small Middle Eastern country, which would later flourish. Gradually, successful Israeli works—some original, some translated—began to be staged by leading theatres. The phenomenon was not left unchallenged: many believed the genre had a corrupting influence. Israel's top creators—Sasha Argov, Dubi Seltzer, Nathan Alterman, and Haim Hefer— helped elevate the Israeli musical.
The show will feature hits from Kazablan, Ish Hasid Haya (Once, There Was a Hassid), Bustan Sephardi (Sephardic Orchard), HaMegilla (The Book of Esther), Mary Lou, Sallah Shabati, Zohar, and other original musicals, along with selections from international musicals that were performed here in their successful Hebrew versions, such as Les Misérables, Yentl, and more.
