Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld: A Blind Date Between Two Titans
Figures in Fashion and Culture series
Editor and lecturer: Yaara Keidar, art curator, fashion historian, and doctoral student of the Cultural Studies Program
Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld never met. in 1983, Lagerfeld succeeded her as head designer at the Chanel Fashion House and breathed new life into the mythology she had left behind: the little black dress, the pearls, and the famous 2.55 case – the symbols of French chic. The lecture will take us behind the scenes of the Maison Chanel, an exciting universe rife with dark secrets, for a historical journey from Coco's days to Karl Lagerfeld's death. Four years have passed since Lagerfeld passed. This is as good as any time to contemplate the fashion house's future. The lecture will also dwell on an upcoming development: the huge exhibition about to open in May at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and the resplendent Gala evening at the Met in its honor.
