"Women's Minyan" is the first play by orthodox bestselling author Naomi Ragen based on a real case brought before Israel's High Court of Justice. It is the story of Chana Kashman, the wife of a respected ultra-Orthodox rabbi from Me'a Shearim, a mother of twelve children, who, by leaving home, finds herself involuntarily cut off from her children, trapped by irresistible social forces. Rumor has it that she is promiscuous and "twisted," having run away to be with another woman. As a result, her husband divorces her and prevents her from having any contact with her children. Through her heroine's story, Ragen sheds light on life in the ultra-Orthodox community and its contemptuous treatment of women. The play reveals that the family's idyllic façade may sometimes hide religious self-righteousness, cover-ups, and refusal to recognize injustice toward women.
