The Child Dreams
Cameri Theater in collaboration with Habima Theater
On May 13 1939, following the violence of Kristallnacht, the St. Louis ship left Hamburg with 936 Jewish refugees, heading for Cuba. The Cuban immigration authorities refused to allow them in. The persecuted ship began to roam from port to port, in the hope of finding a country that would agree to take in the passengers. Hanoch Levin's masterpiece is an escape odyssey to a distant land, to the unknown, fleeing a threatening past to a comforting future. The play, which is suffused with compassion of human love, marks one of the pinnacles of Israeli play writing.
