Uriel (Daniel Kariel): Between Heaven and Earth

Daniel Kriel (b. 1963, Nice) made Aliya to Israel in 1982 and lives in Jerusalem. Since his childhood, he was inspired by the landscapes of the French Riviera, which borders on the sea, and upon moving to Israel, he was captivated by the beauty and unique light of the Land of Israel. This light serves as the inspiration for the vibrant colors that characterize his works and is reflected in his artistic signature name — Uriel. Uriel is the son of Menahem Krief (1928-2016), an international artist. For forty years, his father guided and enlightened Uriel in his art and remains an inspiration until today.

In this exhibition, Uriel presents works that explore themes of Israeli identity, nationalism, universalism, and Judaica. The works express a deep desire to connect roots, identity, and spirit. The artist achieves this through a unique technique involving multiple layers and textures, which highlights the special light that emerges from within. The dominant imagery and color in his pieces, along with the intertwining of line, color, and emotion, create an artistic tapestry through which the artist seeks to express the eternal connection between heaven and earth. The motif of light shines through to the viewer, elevating the spirit and drawing forth emotions and insights from the soul, insights into the eternal bond between heaven and earth. In his artwork, Uriel uses mixed media techniques on canvas, harmoniously incorporating a variety of materials and textures.
