Mordechai Beck: Marduk’s Flowers

Mordechai Beck (b. 1944, Yorkshire, England) was sketching or painting from a young age. By the time he went to Hornsey College of Art in his native London at the age of 16, he was prepared for the rigours of an art education. He was served by some of the best teachers available, many of them recent graduates of the Royal College of Art.  Indeed, the Hornsey School was then considered the leading art school in Europe. In Israel, to which Beck emigrated in 1973, he had to forego art as a means of livelihood. However, in 1986 he returned, via the Jerusalem Print Workshop, where he undertook courses in etching and screen printing. To these he added linoleum cuts and woodcuts of his own.

Beck has participated in several exhibitions, both solo and group, in Israel, the United States, the FSU, and the UK, including an earlier exhibition in the Jerusalem Theatre. His work can be found in the collections of the MoMA, New York; the Library of Congress, Washington D.C.; the Universities of Yale, Berkeley, and Syracuse; and inprivate collections in the USA and the UK.

The series "Marduk’s Flowers" is painted in oil on canvas. The series has a printed version. For Beck, the platform of a series on flowers allows the artist to explore a wide range of emotions and different color combinations without dependence on text or narrative.
