The term "Derech Eretz" can be understood in its primary, literal sense: a physical path connecting locations, but also metaphorically, denoting virtues and interpersonal relationships in the family, community, and country. In the Mishnah, there are ancient references to this expression in different contexts, both as an actual craft or work and in the sense of proper and respectful behavior between people.
