Birthday Candles

The Cameri Theatre

A moving, fascinating drama by Noah Haidle

Translator: Eli Bijaoui

Director: Roni Brodecki

Cast: Ola Schur-Selektar, Yishay Golan/ Micha Selektar, Eran Mor, Kineret Limoni, Naama Chetrit, and Alon Sendler

For her 17th birthday, Ernestine's mother teaches her a cake recipe passed down the generations. It's a simple cake: flour, eggs, butter, and sugar. The most basic ingredients, and yet, they contain a whole world. For about ninety minutes, ninety years of Ernestine's life pass before our eyes - from age 17 to age 107: from childhood to old age, through love and heartbreak, from moments of pain and loss to moments of spiritual transcendence. A life journey full of ups and downs, in which only one thing remains stable: the ceremony of baking the cake every year on the birthday.

  • Reviews:
"Director Roni Brodecki and the play's actors breathe life into the silhouettes created by Noah Haidle, skillfully weaving together points of connection and identification. The acting is subdued, and the characters are humane and moving. The viewers go home in a reflective mood. The play encouraged them to make room for rituals, take a break, embrace the moment, and dwell on what is really important." (Globes)"I laughed, cried, got mad, empathized, and pitied! I especially loved Shani Tur's bull's-eye set, Maya Belzitzman's exquisite music, and the performing skills of the six actors, who handled the comic drama with sensitivity and beauty. Just go to see the show; I highly recommend it." (Michal Daliot)
