The Royal Game (Schachnovelle)

Germany, Austria, 2021 | A film by Philipp Stölzl

1938. The Nazis march through the streets of Vienna. Attorney Josef Bartok tries to escape with his wife to the United States but is arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned alone in a fancy hotel nationalized by the occupiers. His seclusion threatens his sanity and almost breaks his spirit until he manages - in a moment of respite - to steal an old chess manual. This act changes his life but gradually becomes a dangerous obsession.
