A Thousand Splendid Suns
The Gesher Theatre
A stage adaptation of Khaled Husseini's moving book
"Just as a compass needle will always find the north, the accusing finger of a man will always find a woman."
Mariam was married off at the age of 15 to Rashid, a widowed cobbler from Kabul. Their marriage deteriorates since Maryam cannot bear children. Two decades later, during the civil war, Rashid marries Laila, a 14-year-old neighbor whose entire family was killed in the bombing. In contrast to Mariam, Laila gives birth to two children, and the tension in the house reaches new heights. As the Taliban take over the country, life becomes a desperate struggle with hunger, Rashid becoming even more violent and instilling fear in his wives. Finally, the two women decide to change their cruel destiny jointly despite the heavy price they know they will have to pay.
